In this group of works, I attempt to look further into the theme of examination. The nature of examination in the West is highly masculinized, with the all-knowing doctor retaining complete power over the patient. I wanted to break down this dynamic and bring out the vulnerability present in both roles. When one examines something, be it a work of art or another's appearance, a certain type of tenderness has a chance to emerge from the scrutiny. As part of the Autoexaminations, I studied the gestures that make up the medical exam and tried to push their boundaries. When does the gesture turn from being a benign clinical act to a degrading, aggressive or sexualized one? Is it possible for tenderness to arise from such an antiseptic environment? What does it look like when the line between tenderness and aggression is blurred? I invite the viewer to examine the examiner, and the examination itself.
